Ken Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary

Ken Gharial Sanctuary is one among the very limited wildlife sanctuaries in India that are dedicated to breeding programs of Gharial often referred as Indian Gharial or Gavial. It belongs to the family of crocodiles.

The sanctuary is located at the joining point of River Ken and Khudar, at an approx. distance of 22km away from Khajuraho city in Chatturpur District. The sanctuary is a popular destination for animal enthusiasts.

Flora and Fauna:

Flora: Ken Gharial Sanctuary is covered with many varieties of floral species which includesTeak, Sal, Saja, Pterocarpus marsupium, Lagerstroemia parviflora, Haldina cordifloia, Boswellia Serrata, Aonla, Amaltas, Gmelina Arborea, Sterculia Urens etc. This Sanctuary consists of Teak, Sal and miscellaneous forests.

Fauna: The sanctuary exclusively shields the Gharial and has excellent climatic conditions that support as an ideal habitat for Gharial. The Gharials are characterized by their exceedingly elongated and unbelievably slender snouts that invariably demarcates them from their evolutionary contemporaries, the crocodiles. Due to the lack of sheer skull the snout of the Gharial is slender but it is proficient in capturing wee fishes. They also show supple body movements that are not present in other crocodiles.

Other species that can be spotted in the sanctuary are Chinkara, Cheetal, Wild Boar, Nilgai and Peacock.
